A visit to the island is a journey through the centuries, through stories of ancient civilizations, medieval rulers and the cultural heritage they left behind.

Agios Achilleios – An Island with a Story
Agios Achillius is a picturesque island in Lesser Prespa Lake, about 1,700 meters long. Its highest point is the Kale peak, at an altitude of 1,025 meters.
Inhabited since ancient times, Agios Achillius preserves the remains of the ancient settlement of Lika in its southwestern part, a testament to its importance in the distant past.
During the medieval period, the island once again became an important political and spiritual center. The castle, which served as the administrative seat of Samuel’s state, as well as the palaces of Tsar Samuel, were located here.

Today, the only inhabited place on the island is the small village, consisting of a few houses. The village has a long local tradition, and at the beginning of the 20th century it had only four houses.
Interesting local legends are also associated with the island. According to one of them, the number of houses should not exceed eleven, and if a twelfth is built, it will be demolished. This belief is connected with the tradition that there were once twelve churches on the island, which is why the place is considered sacred.
Historically, the island of Agios Achillius was fortified as early as ancient times, further enhancing its appeal as a place of strategic and spiritual importance.

In addition to the basilica, the island is enriched by other important religious monuments, including the Panagia Porphyra Monastery from the beginning of the 16th century, as well as the churches of St. George, St. Dimitri and the Holy Twelve Apostles, which bear witness to the island’s centuries-old spiritual tradition.

Agios Achillius is also a place of living local traditions. Every year, the Panagia Porphyra Festival is held here, featuring traditional music, costumes and gatherings of local residents. The island is also part of the Prespa Cultural Festival, which brings together music, art and cultural heritage in a unique setting.
With its historical monuments, spiritual heritage, traditions and beautiful views of Prespa Lake, the island of Agios Achillius offers a quiet and authentic journey through time – a place for discovery, relaxation and enjoying nature.

Saint Achillius of Prespa
The name of the island of Agios Achillius is connected with the saint whose relics were transferred here during the medieval period. Saint Achillius was a bishop of Larissa and one of the important Christian saints of the early period of Christianity.
Born in Cappadocia toward the end of the 3rd century, he became bishop of Larissa, where he was known for his devotion, compassion and care for the poor and the sick. After his death around 330, St. Achillius was venerated as the protector of Larissa.

At the end of the 10th century, Tsar Samuel transferred the relics of St. Achillius to Prespa, and in honor of the saint, the magnificent Basilica of St. Achillius was built on the island, giving the island its present name. The transfer of the relics and the construction of the basilica confirm the important spiritual and political role that Prespa played during the time of Tsar Samuel.

Basilica of St. Achillius
At the center of the island stands the monumental basilica dedicated to St. Achillius, built at the end of the 10th century. Its remains bear witness to the period when Prespa was one of the important political and spiritual centers of the medieval Balkans.
The basilica is particularly significant because of its connection with Tsar Samuel. According to historical sources, after his death in 1014, he was buried here. Remains of several medieval graves have also been discovered at the site, along with valuable fragments of architecture and decorative art.

The remains of the frescoes and floor mosaics are particularly noteworthy, bearing witness to the high artistic and spiritual level of the period in which the basilica was built.
The Tomb of Tsar Samuel and the Royal Family
One of the most significant archaeological discoveries on the island of Agios Achillius is located in the southern part of the basilica – a group of four monumental tombs, which archaeologists believe belonged to members of the Cometopuli dynasty.

Among them, the tomb associated with Tsar Samuel, who died in 1014, stands out. The tomb was discovered during archaeological excavations in 1965, and its location, architectural design and archaeological finds contributed to its identification as the ruler’s tomb.

In the same part of the basilica there are also tombs associated with other members of the royal family. Archaeological research has shown that the area was also used for the burial of important figures at later times, while other graves containing objects such as coins and jewelry have also been discovered in the surrounding area.
Small Prespa (Mikri Prespa) – A Hidden Gem of the Balkans
