Located south of the village of Kalishta, right on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the Kalishta Monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God is one of the most remarkable spiritual and cultural-historical sites in Macedonia.

The monastery is set in a beautiful natural landscape between the lake and the surrounding cliffs. Its most distinctive feature is its cave churches, built high into the rocks, giving the site a unique atmosphere and character.
Today, the monastery complex consists of several buildings and places of worship. These include the main Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the cave Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the Church of St. Peter and Paul, the cave Church of St. Athanasius, the Chapel of St. Theodore Tiron, as well as the monastery quarters, dining hall, library, and bell tower.

Beyond its religious significance, Kalishta Monastery is an interesting destination for visitors who want to discover the history, traditions, and natural beauty of the Lake Ohrid region.
The monastery is especially lively during the Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God, celebrated on September 21, when a large traditional gathering takes place here.
Cave Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God
One of the most fascinating sights within the Kalishta Monastery complex is the small cave Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. Built high into the cliffs, the church is naturally integrated into the surrounding cave.
The church is believed to date back to the 15th century and was once used as a place of prayer and retreat for monks. In the past, monastic cells and other small churches were located around it.
The interior is decorated with valuable frescoes depicting saints and biblical scenes. Among the most notable are the depictions of the Mother of God with Christ, the Ascension of Christ, the Nativity of Christ, the Baptism of Christ, the Resurrection, and the Transfiguration.
The images of St. Cyril of Thessalonica and St. Clement of Ohrid, painted on the northern wall, are particularly noteworthy.
Thanks to its unusual location, historic frescoes, and views over Lake Ohrid, the cave church is one of the places not to be missed when visiting Kalishta.

Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God
The main monastery church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. Its foundations date back to the 18th century, while the church was renovated in 1977.

The church houses the famous Black Madonna icon, which is connected to a fascinating local legend. According to tradition, during the Second World War, the icon was thrown into Lake Ohrid in an attempt to destroy it. However, it is said to have repeatedly returned to the lakeshore.
Another impressive feature of the church is its richly carved wooden iconostasis, created by the workshop of Naum Donev from Ohrid.

Church of St. Athanasius
South of the main monastery complex, built directly into the surrounding rocks, stands the cave Church of St. Athanasius.
Although few written records about the church have survived, its frescoes indicate that it dates back to the 14th century.
Its unique setting within the natural rock formations and its historic frescoes make it particularly appealing to visitors interested in discovering some of the lesser-known sites around Lake Ohrid.

Church of St. Peter and Paul
The newest church in the monastery complex is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.
It was built in 1990 and consecrated on May 8, 1997. A natural water spring is located beneath the church, adding to the peaceful natural and spiritual atmosphere of the site.

Chapel of St. Theodore Tiron
One of the monastery quarters houses a chapel dedicated to St. Theodore Tiron. The chapel was built and decorated with frescoes in 2002.
The monastery quarters and chapel stand beneath the old branches of the Kalishta plane tree, one of the most recognizable natural features within the monastery complex. With its impressive age and size, the tree gives the central part of the monastery a distinctive appearance.
Visiting Kalishta Monastery
Kalishta Monastery is a place where history, spirituality, and nature come together. Its cave churches, historic frescoes, traditional monastery buildings, and beautiful location on the shores of Lake Ohrid make it an interesting stop for anyone exploring the Struga area.
The monastery continues to be an active women’s monastery and remains an important spiritual site of the Macedonian Orthodox Church. The newer building within the complex also serves as a residence of the Archdiocese.
