On the shores of Lake Doiran in Greece, near the border with Macedonia, lies a remarkable site of remembrance connected with one of the lesser-known chapters of the First World War — the Doiran Front.
The Doiran Military Cemetery and the nearby Doiran Memorial stand among the hills and countryside where Allied (British) and Central Powers (Bulgarian) forces fought a series of fierce battles between 1916 and 1918. Today, the peaceful landscape offers little indication of the intensity of the fighting that once took place here.
For visitors interested in history, military heritage and the First World War, the two sites provide an opportunity to explore an important part of the Macedonian Front, while also offering a quiet and atmospheric setting overlooking the wider Doiran landscape.

Doiran Military Cemetery
The Doiran Military Cemetery, originally known as Colonial Hill Cemetery No. 2, was established at the end of 1916 to serve as British army cemetery for the Doiran Front.
Most of those buried here were officers and soldiers of the 22nd and 26th Divisions, with the graves reflecting some of the major fighting around Doiran during the First World War. Particularly significant were the battles of April and May 1917, including the attacks on the Petit-Couronne, and the fighting of 18–19 September 1918, during the attacks on Pip Ridge and the Grand-Couronne.
Following the final Allied advance in October and November 1918, several additional burials took place, including men who died at the 25th Casualty Clearing Station.
After the Armistice, graves were also brought to Doiran Military Cemetery from nearby battlefields and smaller burial grounds. Among these was Strumica British Military Cemetery, located north-west of Doiran and established by the 40th Casualty Clearing Station in October and November 1918.
Today, the cemetery contains 1,338 Commonwealth burials from the First World War, of which 449 are unidentified. There are also one French and 45 Greek war graves.
The carefully maintained cemetery stands in striking contrast to the events that took place around it. Its rows of headstones and peaceful surroundings provide a poignant reminder of the human cost of the Doiran battles

The Doiran Memorial
Not far from the cemetery stands the Doiran Memorial, located on what was known during the First World War as Colonial Hill.
The memorial occupies approximately the centre of the line held by the Allied forces in Macedonia for two years, although it is situated close to the western end of the sector occupied by Commonwealth troops. This was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Doiran Front in 1917 and 1918.
The memorial commemorates the British Salonika Force and serves as a memorial to more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Macedonia and have no known grave.
The campaign was particularly difficult for the Allied forces. Between October 1915 and the end of November 1918, the British Salonika Force suffered approximately 2,800 deaths in action, 1,400 deaths from wounds and 4,200 deaths from sickness.
The conditions themselves presented enormous challenges. The Allied forces faced difficult mountain terrain, a wide malarial river valley and a shortage of suitable transport infrastructure. Roads and railways had to be constructed to support military operations, while disease remained a persistent threat throughout the campaign.
The Doiran Memorial therefore commemorates not only those who fell in battle, but also the wider experience of the Commonwealth forces that served on the Macedonian Front.
Architecture and History
The memorial was designed by the distinguished Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, while the sculptural work was created by Walter Gilbert.
It was officially unveiled on 25 September 1926 by Sir George Macdonogh.
Its location on the former battlefield makes the memorial particularly significant. Standing on Colonial Hill, visitors can look across the landscape and gain a sense of the terrain over which the opposing forces fought during the final years of the First World War.
The Doiran Front
The area around Lake Doiran formed part of the wider Macedonian Front, where Allied forces faced Bulgarian and German troops.
The front was established in 1915 and remained relatively static for much of the war before the Allied offensive of September 1918 eventually broke through the Bulgarian positions.
Doiran was one of the principal sectors of the front. The surrounding hills — including the Petit-Couronne, Pip Ridge and Grand-Couronne — became heavily fortified positions, and repeated attacks were launched against them.
The fighting here is sometimes overshadowed by better-known battles on the Western Front, yet the Doiran battlefield remains an important part of the history of the First World War in southeastern Europe.
Today, the combination of the cemetery, memorial and surrounding landscape makes the area a particularly interesting destination for those exploring the history of the Macedonian Front.
How to Get There
Doiran Military Cemetery is located in northern Greece, close to the border with Macedonia and near the south-eastern shore of Lake Doiran.
The cemetery is approximately 2 kilometres north-west of Drossato village, behind and west of Doirani village, and is reached via a farm track.
The Doiran Memorial, located on Colonial Hill, is visible from a considerable distance and is clearly signposted.

The cemetery and memorial are permanently open and can be visited at any time.
Visitors are encouraged to approach the site respectfully, as it remains an active place of remembrance for the servicemen buried here and those commemorated by the memorial.
