Why Visit Dobro Pole?
Dobro Pole is closely connected with the breakthrough of the Macedonian Front in September 1918.
The battle was a major event during the final phase of World War I in the Balkans. The breakthrough at Dobro Pole was followed by the collapse of the Bulgarian position and eventually the end of the war.
Today, the area is remote and largely undeveloped.

Getting to Dobro Pole
Dobro Pole is a locality that is on the border between Macedonia and Greece. It can be reached from both sides because it is a larger territory, but since the state border is not allowed to be crossed, you cannot see a large number of the locations in just one visit.
Therefore, the part that is located on the Macedonian side is more interesting for visitors, and here is also the rockery where the so-called Bronze Hand monument was erected in 1938.

How to Reach Dobro Pole by 4×4 from Macedonian side
The route to Dobro Pole starts in Bitola. From the city, head toward the Municipality of Novaci along regional road R1311, passing through the villages of Logovardi, Novaci, Makovo and Rapesh.
From Rapesh, continue along the narrower paved road toward Staravina. The turn-off is approximately 50 km from Bitola, just before the village.
The Real 4×4 Adventure Starts Near Staravina
Before reaching Staravina, turn right toward Mount Nidže. From this point, the paved road ends and the forest track toward Dobro Pole begins.
This section should not be treated as an ordinary gravel road. Depending on the weather and recent conditions, the track can range from relatively easy to quite difficult.
There are also several smaller forest tracks branching off the main route. Without good navigation, it is easy to take the wrong track.
Do not rely solely on Google Maps. Before your trip, download an offline GPS map and save the route on your phone or GPS device.

Dobro Pole GPS Route – Rural Adventure
The published route is used for off-road vehicles and bicycles, but conditions on the ground can change. An older GPS track should therefore never be considered a guarantee that the route is currently passable.

Staravina – Cerova Polyana
The distance from Staravina to Dobro Pole is approximately 23 km, and the drive can take around 2 hours or more in one direction, depending on road conditions, weather and driving speed.
After approximately 9 km, you reach the area known as Cerova Polyana.
From this point, the road branches toward several locations, including Pet Chesmi, Dobro Pole and the sources of the Gradeshka River.
A small chapel dedicated to St. Archangel Michael is also located near this section of the route.
From Cerova Polyana Toward Dobro Pole
After Cerova Polyana, the terrain gradually becomes more challenging.
The climb becomes steeper, while the forest road deteriorates significantly in some sections. The condition of the track depends heavily on the weather and on how recently it has been maintained.
After rain, some sections can become muddy and slippery. Strong winds and storms can also bring fallen trees onto the road.
Before continuing, assess the condition of the track and the capabilities of your vehicle.
A capable 4×4, suitable tires and basic recovery equipment are strongly recommended.
In some situations, it may simply be impossible or unsafe to continue if the road is blocked by a fallen tree or has been seriously damaged.
The Final Section to Dobro Pole
As you approach the end of the route, at approximately 24 km from Staravina, the road divides again.
From this point:
- the left branch leads to the abandoned “Karaula (Military border post)”, approximately 500 m away;
- the right branch leads toward the area known as Bronze Hand, approximately 900 m away.
Bronze Hand is particularly interesting because it offers one of the best views toward the Dobro Pole area.
⚠️ Important: Border Area
This part of the mountain is located on the border with Greece.
Do not cross the international border.
Do not blindly follow a GPS track if it leads toward or across the border. Old roads and tracks may still be visible on the mountain and may look like normal forest roads, but that does not mean you are permitted to continue along them.
Before your trip, always check the current access conditions and whether any permits are required.
Permission from the police station in Novaci is required for visiting Dobro Pole. It is also recommended to travel with an experienced guide who knows the area.
Because regulations and procedures can change, verify the current requirements with the relevant authorities shortly before your trip.

The Last Part of the Journey

Depending on the route and current road conditions, you may need to leave the vehicle and continue on foot.
This means that a trip to Dobro Pole is not simply a 4×4 drive. It can also involve hiking through remote mountain terrain, so visitors should come prepared for both.
Wear Appropriate Clothing and Footwear
Proper clothing and footwear are essential.

Keep the Remoteness in Mind

Depending on your exact location and route, you can be approximately three hours by vehicle from Bitola and major emergency medical services such as a hospital or emergency department.
Mobile phone coverage is also not guaranteed. There are areas along the route where there may be no mobile signal at all.
For this reason, do not plan the trip as if help is only a phone call away.
Carry enough food and water, have offline maps available, tell someone where you are going, and avoid traveling alone if you are unfamiliar with the area.

The Nearest Villages Are Very Sparsely Populated
The villages in this part of Mariovo are small and sparsely populated.

Dobro Pole and Zovik
Consider making Zovik part of your trip. Its is one of the better-known villages in Mariovo and provides an opportunity to experience the rural side of the region.
The village is 4 km from the regional road Bitola-Staravina and visitors usually visit it on their way back from Dobro Pole. Here, you can visit the Ethno House “At the Bridge (Кај Мостот)” and taste the traditional specialties from the Mariovo region.
The ethno house operates only with prior notice.
When Should You Visit?
The best period depends on the current mountain conditions.
The road is usually passable from /May to November, depending on weather and road conditions.
Before leaving, check:
- rainfall
- storms
- temperature
- wind
- snow
- forest-road conditions
If heavy rain has recently affected the region, expect muddy and difficult tracks.
Don’t Travel Alone if You Are New to the Area
Dobro Pole is not the place to discover the limits of your vehicle for the first time.
