The itinerary focuses on the Bitola–Novaci part of Mariovo, including the villages of Staravina, Gradeshnica and Zovich. You’ll find suggestions for places to visit, walks to take, where to stay, and practical information to help you organize your trip at your own pace.
There is no fixed group itinerary and no need to follow a guide from one location to another. Choose the places and walks that interest you, spend as much time as you like in nature, and decide where you want to stay overnight.

About Mariovo
Mariovo is a remote mountainous region in southern part of Macedonia, surrounded by high mountain ranges and divided by the Crna River into two traditional areas: Big (Old) Mariovo and Small (New) Mariovo. Today, the region extends across the municipalities of Novaci (also known as Bitola part), Prilep and Kavadarci.
Despite its long history, Mariovo remained relatively isolated from major roads and urban centers, helping preserve many of its traditional customs, settlements, and this is what makes it unique today. Archaeological discoveries indicate human settlements in this region since prehistoric times.
One of Mariovo’s best-known legends tells of Princess Maria, also known as Mara Sultanija, who is said to have received the region from the Ottoman sultan. According to the legend, she chose village Vitolishte as her home and founded the Chebren Monastery on the Crna River, and thus this region became “Maria’s land”, or Mariovo. The story is deeply rooted in local tradition, although its historical details remain uncertain.
During Ottoman rule, Mariovo enjoyed a special autonomous status, which further contributed to its distinctive character and relative isolation. The region suffered heavy destruction during the First World War, when Mariovo became part of the front line.
After the Second World War, Mariovo experienced a period of economic development, but from the 1970s onwards, large-scale migration from the villages began.
Today, Mariovo is one of the most sparsely populated regions in the Balkans, known for its dramatic landscapes, historic villages and remarkably preserved rural character.

Getting to Mariovo from Bitola
The best time to start your journey is between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. From the Bitola exit, at the Dulie roundabout (Google Maps…), take the regional road R1311 towards the villages of Logovardi (5 km) and Novaci (9 km).
* For the purposes of this article, the Dulie roundabout will be used as the starting point (the entrance to Bitola from the direction of Skopje, near Bliss Shopping Centre). Distances to the locations mentioned below will be measured from this point.

Continue along the road, passing by the REK Bitola power plant and the Meglenci landfill.
Immediately after the Meglenzi landfill, you will reach the former village of Suvodol near the well-known World War I historical site Hill (Elevation 1050).
The road then continues alongside the Suvodol artificial lake, towards the villages Makovo (29 km), Rapesh (33 km) and the Canyon of Crna River (approximately 36 km).
There is a beautiful viewpoint when you reach the canyon, which is also an excellent opportunity to take a short break from the drive (Google Maps location).
From this point, the asphalt road becomes narrower and, after crossing the Crna River, continues into the area known as Old Mariovo.
At approximately 45 km, you will reach the first turn-off to the left. This is an approximately 5 km-long paved road leading to the village of Zovich.
Further along the route are the turn-offs for: Grunishte (47 km) and Budimirci (48 km) and passes by village Staravina – 49 km.
The regional road R1311 ends in the center of Gradešnica village (52 km), and this is our first stop.

How self-guided tours work
Follow the link to the specific tour on the RuralAdventure.mk website. Each tour is displayed there with photos, details, and a map. While you can access the tours via the website, internet and mobile network coverage is limited in many parts of Mariovo; therefore, it is recommended to follow the links to download them via the free izi.Travel app (available on Google Play or the App Store) so you can use them offline. Once you download the tour, it uses your location to guide you to the selected places.
Or Simply Enjoy the Gradeška River
If walking through the village isn’t your priority, you can choose a much more relaxed option.
Head towards the Gradeška River and spend part of the day in nature.
The river and its surroundings are ideal for:
- Having a picnic
- Relaxing in nature
- Photography
- Reading or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings
- Spending time with family or friends
- Swimming or cooling off where conditions are suitable
There is no need to fill every minute of your weekend. One of the attractions of Mariovo is precisely the opportunity to slow down.

Getting Around Mariovo: You Need Your Own Transport
One of the most important things to know before visiting Mariovo is that there is no regular public transport connecting the villages and attractions in the region.
This means that independent travelers need to plan their transportation in advance.
For visitors who do not have their own vehicle, renting one is the best option.
When choosing a rental car, consider the type of roads and your planned itinerary. A standard car is suitable for the main asphalt routes, while visitors planning to explore more remote locations should check road conditions and vehicle suitability in advance.

What to Bring for a Mariovo Weekend
Mariovo is a rural destination, so it is important to come prepared.
We recommend bringing:
- Comfortable outdoor clothing
- Good walking shoes
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sunscreen, preferably SPF 30 or higher
- Insect repellent
- Drinking water
- Personal medication
- A small backpack
- Camera or smartphone
- Swimming equipment if you plan to spend time near the river
- Camping equipment if you are camping
Some areas have high grass, insects, uneven ground and other natural conditions. Appropriate footwear and clothing are recommended even if you are planning only short walks.

Safety Recommendations
Mariovo is a remote and sparsely populated region. Visitors should be prepared for limited access to emergency and public services.
- No local medical services: The villages have no ambulance, pharmacy, emergency room, doctor, medic, medical clinic, pharmacy, or other permanent medical facility/personnel. In case of a medical emergency, call 112.
- Limited public services: There are no local police stations, fire departments, municipal offices or similar public-service branches in the villages. For police matters, the responsible station is the Police Station in Novaci (Phone +389 47 282 122).
- Remote terrain: Mobile-phone coverage may be limited and emergency assistance can take considerable time to reach remote locations.
- Road and vehicle safety: Roads can be narrow, winding and in poor condition. Drive carefully and ensure your vehicle has sufficient fuel and basic emergency equipment.
- Forest and wildfire danger: During the summer months, movement through forests and natural areas may be prohibited due to forest-fire danger. Always follow official restrictions and access closures.
- Do not enter restricted forest areas. Independent movement through remote forest areas is dangerous due to difficult terrain, limited communications and the distance from emergency services. A qualified local guide is strongly recommended when visiting forest areas.
- Never light fires or undertake activities that could cause a fire. If you see a fire or smoke, move away from the area and call 112 when safe to do so.
- Before travelling, inform someone of your itinerary and check current weather, road and wildfire conditions.
